In today's ever-changing world, we've seen sustainability and technical advancements make huge changes in various areas of life. Transport and vehicles have seen a massive change over the years. With the introduction and increase in electric vehicles, we've seen a huge change in the way individuals and businesses are using EV to commit to more sustainable transport.
Electric vehicles aren't the only commitment to sustainability we're seeing. Solar powered charging points have taken the industry by storm, allowing both individuals and larger corporations the ability to save costs and the environment. Our blog looks at the rise of solar-powered EV charging and where the future could take us. To learn more, keep on reading.
The Rise Of Hybrid & Electric Vehicles
Sustainable transport has become increasingly important over recent years. We've seen a drastic change in the way we approach transport and travel to accommodate the environment and release fewer greenhouse gases.
Hybrid & Electric Vehicles
More individuals and companies are turning to hybrid or electric vehicles instead of petrol and diesel cars. There are many reasons why hybrid and electric vehicles are more favourable. Read below to learn more about why these vehicles are becoming more popular.
Reduced fuel costs - One of the key advantages that comes with hybrid and electric vehicles is the reduced spend on fuel in comparison to spending on electricity. For solar-powered home EV charging points, individuals can save even more by using EVs.
No idling - Many hybrid and electric cars will automatically switch off their engines when you're sitting idle. Whether you're sitting in traffic or parked somewhere in your vehicle, you won't need to worry about burning fuel while sitting idle.
Fewer emissions - Another big advantage of opting for hybrid and electric vehicles is the reduced emissions released by the vehicle. This protects the environment massively and is helping countries move towards net-zero goals.
Tax incentives - There are better incentives out there for electric and hybrid vehicles, despite them being more expensive in general.
High resale value - Hybrid and electric vehicles are a great example of modern technology and depreciate at a slower rate than petrol or diesel vehicles. You may find that when it comes to selling your electric/hybrid model the resale value will be high.
2035 Diesel Ban
The UK government has introduced a ban on the sale of new diesel and petrol cars starting from 2035. This ban is intended to drive the transition from petrol, diesel, and hybrid models to electric vehicles (EV), moving our transport choices to a more sustainable future.
The sale of new diesel, petrol, and hybrid vehicles will be banned, however the ban does not impact existing diesel and petrol vehicle owners. In addition to the increase of electric vehicles being driven, we may also see a rise of electric charging stations, and a decrease in petrol/diesel stations across the nation.
The Importance Of Solar EV Charging Point Installations
EV charging is crucial for electric vehicle users and protecting the environment. In 2021, transportation alone contributes to over a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. This is 427 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, which causes a huge impact to our environment. This called for an urgent need to reduce the carbon being emitted on British roads.
The UK government has recently placed more pressure and importance on the need for zero-emission and goals, which are crucial for sustainable development and combating the harmful impacts of carbon dioxide emissions. Widespread progress is being made across various countries to accelerate net-zero progression and combat the transport emission issues.
Why We Need More Charging Infrastructure
Realising the importance of having a secure EV charging infrastructure can allow us to develop the current system we have here in the UK and improve it. As of April 1st 2023, there were 40,150 public electric vehicle charging devices installed in the UK.
Charging speed of devices:
7647 rated rapid (19%) of all charging devices
22,338 rated fast (56%) of all charging devices
The location of charging devices:
19,044 were considered destination chargers
13,571 were 'on street' chargers
Compared to the 1st January 2023:
The UK government has had a long-standing target of having at least 6 rapid, or ultra rapid EV chargers at every service station in England. However, only 46 out of 119 service stations fit this criteria. IThe UK government has recently come under fire for failing to meet this target, and so plugging this gap has become of great importance. With this in mind, we may see a great change in the amount of EV charging points, based on the set demand.
With the escalating number of electric vehicles on the roads, and the amount predicted to be on the roads in the coming years, the demand for EV charging points is growing. Accommodating these vehicles with the necessary means to charge is essential for maintaining sustainable transport effectively. Long journeys in EV vehicles and Ev charging needs to be made efficient, in order to accommodate the current electric vehicles, and the rapid growth we are going to see.
The Future Of Sustainable Transportation
The zero emission goals in the UK state that car manufacturers need to ensure that at least 22% of new cars sold in 2024 are entirely zero emission vehicles. Over the years, this goal is set to increase in demand, meaning that ideally, 80% of vehicles sold in 2030 will be zero emission. If automotive industries are failing to meet these targets, substantial fines will be delivered. These goals are set to drastically change the world of transport as we know it.
The market for EV charging points has not been explored in depth yet. Commercial sites such as shopping centres, retail parks and hospitality venues have the opportunity to capitalise on this. Not having EV charging stations now, and in the future can be detrimental to visitors. Commercial EV charging services can do more than just attract electric vehicle drivers. It can encourage drivers to stay in a place for at least 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on how long they are charging for, which can actually help organisations to generate more business.
EV chargers are a driving force in commitment to widespread change. They symbolise more than just a place to recharge your vehicle, showcasing the commercial and industrial changes that our future holds. Hotels, restaurants and other commercial sites are able to demonstrate their attitudes and build a responsible reputation towards the environment.
