Sustainability Goal: From Roof Refurbishment to Long-Term Energy Generation

Project Overview

From Roof Refurbishment to Long-Term Energy Generation

MJB Excavation wanted to reduce energy costs and improve the long-term sustainability of its Halifax operations through onsite renewable energy generation.

Before solar could be installed, the existing roof required refurbishment to ensure it was suitable for the lifespan and performance expectations of a commercial solar PV system.

Sol PV Group delivered a complete turnkey solution, beginning with the installation of a new overclad roof system to futureproof the building envelope and create a secure foundation for solar.

The result was a fully integrated 168.75 kWp SolarEdge solar PV system designed to reduce grid reliance, lower operating costs and maximise the value of the site’s newly refurbished roof space.

SolarEdge Commercial Rooftop Solar PV System

Following completion of the overclad roof installation, Sol PV Group designed and installed a 168.75 kWp SolarEdge solar PV system tailored to MJB Excavation’s operational energy requirements.

The installation included:

  • 375 high-efficiency solar modules
  • 189 SolarEdge power optimisers
  • 2 SolarEdge commercial inverters
  • Module-level performance monitoring
  • 90% performance ratio
  • A design optimised to maximise generation across the available roof space

189 power optimisers were installed across the system, enabling module-level performance optimisation and monitoring. This SolarEdge technology helps maximise energy yield, improve visibility across the array and minimise the impact of shading or module mismatch on overall system performance.

The completed system allows MJB Excavation to generate a significant proportion of its electricity onsite, reducing dependence on imported grid energy whilst creating a long-term energy asset for the business.

Financial Impact

The combination of roof refurbishment and solar PV installation transformed an existing roof asset into a long-term energy-generating investment.

With a total system investment of £244,760, the project is forecast to deliver approximately £46,792 in first-year energy savings and revenue, providing a strong commercial return whilst reducing exposure to future electricity price increases.

The financial model demonstrates:

  • £244,760 Total System Investment
  • £46,792 Year 1 Revenue & Savings
  • 5 Year Payback Period
  • 25.86% Internal Rate of Return
  • 105.52 Tonnes of Annual CO₂ Savings

By generating renewable electricity onsite, MJB Excavation benefits from:

    • Reduced reliance on grid electricity
    • Lower operational energy costs
    • Improved sustainability performance
    • Greater control over future energy expenditure
    • Strong long-term return on investment

Why This Project Matters?

This project wasn’t simply about installing solar panels.

It was about creating the right foundations for long-term energy performance.

Before renewable energy generation could begin, MJB Excavation needed a roofing solution capable of supporting the lifespan and performance requirements of a commercial solar PV installation.

By combining roof refurbishment with solar PV deployment, Sol PV Group delivered a complete solution that futureproofed the facility, improved building longevity and unlocked substantial long-term energy savings.

The result is a high-performing renewable energy system capable of generating nearly £47,000 in annual savings, delivering a 5-year payback period and creating long-term value from previously underutilised roof space.
